Blood Relation Problems - Solved Examples

Example1: 

K’s father’s Sister’s father is L. How is L related to K?

(a)    Father

(b)   Uncle

(c)    Grandfather

(d)   Son

Explanation:
Answer - (C) Here K’s Father’s sister is K’s Aunt. Her father is K’s father’s father. Therefore, L is grandfather of K.

Example 2 :

Pointing to a man in a photograph, a woman said " The father of his brother is the only son of my grandfather". How is the woman related to the man in the photograph?
(a)    Mother

(b)   Aunt

(c)    Daughter

(d)   Sister


 Explanation:Answer - (d) From the information, it is clear that the only son woman's grandfather is the father of the man.On comining these two informations toogether a single information emerges that the man's father is the woman's father.Hence woman is the sister of the man in the photograph.

Example 3:

U + V means U is the brother of V,

W – X means W is the father of S,

X  Y means X is the sister of Y,

Y  Z means Z is the mother of Y.

Which of the following means that N is the mother of O?

(a) L + M ÷ N × O

(b) L – M × O ÷ P

(c) N ÷ M × L ÷ O

(d) M + L ÷ O × N


 Explanation: Answer - (d) M + L ÷ O  N means M is the brother of L and L is the sister of O and N is the mother of O.

Blood Relation Problems - Introduction

Blood relation  problems mainly deal with the hierarchical structure of a family i.e., grand-parents, parents and children etc. Different relationships between the family members of different generations will be given. To solve the questions related to blood relations, the entire family tree has to be drawn by putting the various relationships.In India everyone is familiar with their relationships.So solving these kind of problems wont be a challenge at all.

In such problems, the aptitude of candidate is shown by the knowledge of the various blood relations. You need to remember key points which  are commonly used in blood relation problems are summarized as follows:




 Father’s or Mother’s son = Brother
 Father’s or Mother’s daughter = Sister
 Father’s or Mother’s brother = Uncle
 Father’s or Mother’s sister = Aunt
 Father’s or Mother’s father = Grandfather
 Father’s or Mother’s mother = Grandmother
 Brother’s or Sister’s Son = Nephew
 Brother’s or Sister’s Daughter = Niece
 Uncle’s or Aunt’s son or daughter = Cousin
 Sister’s Husband = Brother-in-law
 Brother’s wife = Sister-in-law
 Son’s wife = Daughter-in-law
 Daughter’s Husband = Son-in-law
 Husband’s or wife’s sister = Sister-in-law
 Husband’s or wife’s Brother = Brother-in-law
 Grandfather's son = Father or Uncle
